Title: Kung Fu Killforce
Post by: FIC on August 04, 2011, 08:23:07 PM
GENTLEMEN.

As you know I have entered the uDevGames 2011 contest, and I'd like to show you guys what I've been working on. I'm joined in this project by Erik Skov (aka ZappBrannigan) who is responsible for the sweet sweet pixels you're seeing.

BDPE monglers get the exclusive first look before anyone else!

Here is the project page:

Screenshots:

Download:

Kung Fu Killforce! (http://www.justinfic.com/downloads/KungfuKillforce_Aug_05.zip) (SudoSushi: link fixed)

Enjoy! Not much to the game yet, as it's still a prototype, but you can run around and punch dudes. Let me know what you think so far!

I like the speed of the game, controls are placed a little close together for a macbook pro keyboard though.
I'd image stuff like widescreen support or bonus points for mid air kills would come later cause it's quite fun to try and master the art of special kick flight.

Fixed the link to the download.
Going to give it a try later tonight :)

I really like the gore effects. Exploded faces sticking to the walls is a nice touch. You proberly already know this but the hit counter resets after 999hits. This disappoints me. I was going for ALL TIME MASTER KUNG FU KILLFORCE KOMBO.

Link seems to be broken again, or at least when I click it I'm redirected to UPC search site!

Try it again.. For some reason it keeps putting http://http://..
I correct it and it saves fine but then come an hour or so, BROKE.
Well, if it's still not working:

PPC? Damn, no fun. I'm not sure but I think xcode still compiles in universal binaries.. I'll ask fic to knock out a universal binary (if possible) :)

Thanks for giving the prototype a whirl! Much more cool shit coming in the next week or so.

I'm on it! I thought I had that shit fixed but I'll give it a look tonight.

On the reset at 999 hits-- are you sure? I just tried it and got 1000+ and it worked.

Multiple resolutions (including widescreen) are definitely on the list, albeit a ways away, and there will definitely be mad bonuses for knocking people out in midair and such. Right now it just awards more points the higher your hit chain gets, but I also want to have bonuses for trick kills that you can rack up a la combos in Tony Hawk.

BTW, do you mean WASD and the ./ keys or ./ and the arrow keys?

Heh, was just about to message you about the PPC thing.

I think I figured it why I was reset at >999hits; timer reset.

BOOM UNIVERSAL BINARY

./ and the arrow keys, actually now that I think of it I don't know why I didn't just use wsad

I will throw in z and x to complement the arrow keys as well, and also to stick to the convention that all of the Flixel games out there use. Eventually the controls will all be customizable, but that may also be post-contest.

BTW, does anyone rock out USB joysticks when they play games on Mac/PC? If so, which ones?

Title: Re: Kung Fu Killforce
Post by: SudoSushi on August 05, 2011, 06:07:08 PM
My first instinct was to use the arrow keys (haven't played a PC game in a very long time), but because I didn't read the brief instructions at the beginning of the game, I had to find the jump/attack keys by mashing the keyboard ;)

Ended up using WASD and it felt good. Can't wait for the finished game.
Also can't wait for Skyrim, Diablo 3, The Reckoning and, of course, BURGERQUEST.

I hope Miller gets with the program and gives us some speed up in burger quest, I know we've gotta keep up with canon in that Blake is slow or something but if blake is as pedestrian as he was in the video it might affect gameplay.

Another quick build I put together because someone said there weren't enough blood and gibs in the game.

FIVE POINT PALM EXPLODING HEART TECHNIQUE GO (http://www.justinfic.com/downloads/KungfuKillforce_Aug_05_MoreBlood.zip)

I'm going to find a place to use this effect somewhere because squee

Weird, that build is crashing on me. Let me give it another try.

Update: yeah, crashes on me after ~10 seconds.

Crash log:

Update 2: Seems to be when I get a combo.

Update 3: Nope, it's when something dies.

Any other mongler with a PPC handy?

Can I just say that Apple haven't sold a PPC mac in almost 5 years. My old G4 is in my dead machine library. I mean massive props for keeping the PPC dream alive but they are ancient machines now days.

Back on topic, about to try the game since the download links have been broken for a while but no longer. Fic = God

So the game crashes on me about 10 seconds in when you kill some like just like what Sudo here has. Here is my crash log.

I know probably just me and two other fans are going use the ppc version but still I would love to be able to play it.

Low on coins, buh I went on a ebay type site to see what I could for my mac, maybe trade in for a newer mac. Bought it for 1400 euro's and they are now going for 90 euros :'( Plus it does everything I need it to do except games, but I have my 3city for that.

Hmmmm well gaddamn.

The super gore version was mostly a joke, it's essentially 10x as much blood/body parts. I want to use that effect somewhere though so I'll take a look at it. I seem to be the only person it works for. :/  (Does the super blood version work for ANYONE?)

Title: Re: Kung Fu Killforce

Waaaait I think I know what's causing the crash-- the app doesn't like being renamed, and if you downloaded more than one, it probably unzips it and renames it. For those of you crashing, try renaming the new app back if it got renamed, and let me know if that fixes things?

Ah yes, works flawlessly. The added gore is nice, possibly add it as some sort of power-up? :)

Protip - Don't collect a bunch of guys at the bottom and then karate kick them all. SO. MUCH. GORE.

You mean DO collect a bunch of guys at the bottom! A huge part of the game will be chaining and setting up huge combos like that (although I don't intend for it to be as easy as it is right now.)

And I totally want to reuse that effect in a temporary powerup. Sort of like APOCOFIST.

Nice to see three of your previous games in the hall of FAME. The whole of BDPE is behind you!

I'm slightly terrified at the thought of how the difficulty of the game will pan out in the final version, being a FIC game I just imagine getting raped by enemies giving you the slightest tap on the shoulder.

Now that I have it working, it's definitely a great start. You at least have the basic handling down but I'm sure that will go through a lot of tweaking.

Thankyousir!! I'm glad you guys dig my stuff.

On the difficulty, I'm trying a little something new this time. The game will of course be hard, but I'm working on an adaptive difficulty system that doesn't suck ass. Basically the game starts off at a manageable level for everyone, but the harder and faster you kick its ass, the harder and faster it comes back at you. And the harder it comes back at you, the more points you can score. I'd like to do away with difficulty levels altogether and still have a game that anyone can play. And there will be no upper limit to how tough the game gets.

And the handling will definitely be tweaked a lot before the game is finished. I jiggle the levels almost every day actually, and season to taste. There will eventually be five different kung fu styles to play each with their strengths and weaknesses, and each one handles differently.

Thanks gents! I'm glad you guys dig it, a lot of love/insanity/teriyaki sauce went into this one, and it's kind of a return to roots for me after years of being in the Capital I Industry.

I'm looking to improve the game even more so if you guys have any ideas for improvements or things you'd like to see, post em!!!

As for next steps, I want to get a Windows version going in the next week or so, and an iOS port going by November. Online high scores and meticulous game balance are both on the todo list, as is FULL gamepad support (right now it only supports a few unless you have something like Gamepad Companion or USB Overdrive.) Erik also designed a few more cool levels that would be cool to have as choosable arenas. And if you guys got any requests, I'd love to hear em!

The MAS and iOS app store make distribution easy, and from there I'd like to roll the dice and see if I can't get the attention of Steam. In the meantime, PayPal seems like it can sell programs pretty effectively. And finally, while the market scares me, I know this game could absolutely own XBLIG.
